They are inherently polar opposites, and choosing one solution over the other might be easy for some people but difficult for others. Let’s take a look at how they’re different.

Size & Scale

If you’re looking for numbers, I’ve got no counter to that. Hands down, a copywriting agency is where you want to be if you’re looking for a huge team of copywriters to bust out content for you quickly. They have the scale to do so; I don’t think anyone is denying that.

However, there’s something to be said for working with the “little guys.” Especially when you look locally, you can keep your hard-earned dollars in your community rather than shipping it to a big conglomerate, or (let’s be honest) another country.

Skills & Expertise

This one is fun to talk about, because copywriting agencies are always going to have a hypothetical leg-up here. They have tons of writers under their umbrella, so (theoretically) there’s always someone available to write niche content for you.

But, you’re not going to get the same treatment that you would if you, say, worked with a freelance copywriter who has spent 5 years writing medical blogs (hi, that’s me). Again, the rapport you build with a freelance writer is worth its weight in gold. They get to know you and your brand better than a team of copywriters who see your content once or twice a year.


I’m not going to lie here. You’re going to pay more for a freelance writer (if they’re worth it, anyway). But, when you think about it, that extra cost is totally warranted.

Think about the one-on-one time they spend with you. Heck, I spent over an hour on the phone with one of my clients today alone — but that’s never wasted time. That time helps me understand that client’s brand a little bit more so that I can make appropriate recommendations and keep busting out dynamite content for them.

So, yeah, you’re going to spend more than pocket change on a professional, freelance writer. But it’s worth it.


Copywriting agencies might, at first, appear flexible — that’s just because they have so many writers working for them. However, when you dive in and really look at what they’re offering, it’s all very “cookie cutter.”

And trust me when I tell you, I know your business is anything but cookie cutter. So why would you want cookie cutter content? Your business deserves content that’s as unique as it is — and you are.

Working with a freelance copywriter is different; you work directly with them to discover and discuss your business’s basic needs when it comes to content. Then, you can create custom solutions with them that fit you like a glove.

When you work with a copywriting agency, that’s all kind of wishy-washy. You might get different writers every time, and, while they might get you your work on time, there might be several rounds of edits before you get what you wanted.

Ultimately, the best way to decide whether to hire a copywriting agency or a freelance copywriter is to consider your specific needs and budget. If you’re not sure which is the best option for you, it’s always a good idea to get quotes from both types of providers before making a decision.

You also need to consider how well an agency will be able to stick with your project. It’s always best to have the same writer work on all of your projects. This way, there’s a “congruency” amongst all the bits of content. That might sound cheesy but it actually makes a whole lot of sense. If you’ve read novels by different writers, you’ll know what I mean.

So, obviously my suggestion to you is that you hire a freelance writer. The attention to your brand and your specific project is unparalleled.
